Movember challenge
Posted: 19th November 2018The challenge is on as teachers – and a student – battle it out to produce the best facial hair for Movember.
The Movember Foundation is on a mission to stop men dying too young by encouraging them to talk more about prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide.
At Burnt Mill Academy teachers Luke Burrows, Alaric Cook, Philip Latchford and Khan Busby are taking part by growing moustaches throughout the month of November.
Year 9 student Toms Xavi was so keen to join in with the campaign, he is wearing a different stick-on moustache each day to raise awareness and money for the cause.
Mr Burrows, head of computer science and ICT, said: “Statistics say that prostate cancer kills more people than breast cancer, but it receives half the funding. We wanted to do something that put the focus onto the boys. Working in a school, it felt even more appropriate to focus some attention onto mental health and suicide prevention as that’s so relevant for young people today.
“We are talking about Movember in school and it acts as a way of bringing up conversations and discussions around those important topics which can only be a good thing.” Sponsor the team, who are also holding assemblies on Movember, online here.
