What skills will students develop and demonstrate?

  • Choreography: A wider movement vocabulary, ability to structure a routine effectively, choreograph using a range of stimuli, working independently with creative control
  • Performance: Improved technical ability, confidence, characterisation
  • Appreciation: Evaluate and analyse your own work, evaluate, reflect upon professional works, efficiently peer assess other students, reflect upon your own work setting clear targets.

How will students’ learning be assessed?

  • Dance Anthology - 40% written paper 1 hour 30 minutes
  • Choreography - 30% practical examination, video submission
  • Group Performance/Solo Performance - 30% practical examination, video submission.

What grades can students’ access?

What will students learn about?

  • Dance Anthology underpins learning across each of the three core areas. The anthology's mix of artistic, cultural and aesthetically diverse works, has been selected to broaden students' knowledge and understanding of the wide range of dance choreographed and performed in the United Kingdom today. Students must be able to critically analyse, interpret and evaluate their own work in performance and choreography and demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of professional practice in the six set works in the GCSE Dance Anthology.
  • Solo Performance - Students must learn how to perform as a solo dancer for approximately one minute. In conjunction with the student, the teacher must select two of the following set phrases for each student to perform as a soloist, from the choice of four set by AQA. The titles of the set phrases are as follows: • breathe • flux • shift • scoop.
  • Group Performance - Students must learn how to perform as part of a duet/trio dance. Each student must perform for a minimum of three minutes in a dance which is a maximum of five minutes in duration. The duet/trio dance may be choreographed by teacher, dance artist or by collaboration between teacher and/or dance artist and students.
  • Choreography - Students must learn how to respond creatively to an externally set stimulus, to choreograph their own complete dance. The dance created must be either: a solo or a group dance which includes a chosen aural setting, can be in any style or style fusion(s) and communicates their own chosen choreographic intention.

What can students’ progress on to after completing this course?

  • BTEC qualifications, applied and job-related learning in dance studies, choreography, musical theatre, performing arts or education.
  • Apprenticeships in community arts practice, performing arts publishing or administration.
  • A levels in dance studies, performance studies, musical theatre and all genres.
