National title for trampoline star

National title for trampoline star

Posted: 14th January 2020

A young sportswoman has clinched her second national title in a year.

Shannon Waterman has been crowned the best in trampolining in Britain after coming first in the League Trampolining National Finals at Derby Arena.

She also represented Burnt Mill Academy at the eastern regional round of the British Schools Gymnastics Association trampolining competition at Hatfield University.

Competing in the Elite category, Shannon came first and qualified for the zonal round in Wales in January.

The Year 9 student, also a member of Flight Trampoline Club, is helping to shape and develop PE sessions at their school.

PE teacher Doug Hynd said: “The standard is very high at these competitions, but Shannon has consistently qualified for them for the last few years.

“With venues such as Jump Giants, young people have an even greater interest in trampolining. After Christmas, we will be spending more time in lessons on trampolining and pushing it even more. Shannon comes down after school to demonstrate what she can do and to help to coach other students.

“Seeing the standards out there and seeing our own students doing so well at such a high level is fantastic. We have success locally, but to be in a national competition and bigger regional competitions and achieving is amazing. It is great for the school to have such high success.”
