What will students learn about?

Students work with both a wide range of manual and digital photog- raphy skills and techniques. Students are required to develop knowledge, understanding and skills relevant to their chosen topic through engagement with original works and practice. A range of project topics include; Manual settings, Viewpoints, Food and Identity.

Students may work with both traditional and new media. Students should produce practical and critical/contextual work in one or more area(s) including theme-based photography (portrait, landscape, still- life, reportage , documentary photography, photo-journalism, narrative photography, experimental imagery, photographic installation, new media practice, video, television and film.

What skills will students develop and demonstrate?

Students are introduced to a variety of experiences employing a range of media, processes and techniques appropriate to the chosen areas of study. Knowledge and understanding of photography should be developed through research, the development of ideas and making activities. They will develop camera skills and learn composition.

Candidates should develop knowledge, understanding and the capability to evaluate:

  • How knowledge and understanding of the work of others can extend thinking and inform their own work
  • A range of photography processes including two and/or three- dimensions and traditional and new media technologies
  •  How images, artefacts and products relate to social, historical, vocational and cultural contexts

How will students’ learning be assessed?

Unit 1 Portfolio of Work

Controlled Assessment (60%) Candidate portfolio selected from work undertaken during course of study and must include more than one project.

Unit 2 Externally Set Task

Approx. 8 weeks preparation time.
10 hours of sustained focused study (exam) (40%)
Candidates respond to their chosen starting point.
