Burnt Mill Academy Launches Working Partnership with Wheelwrights

Burnt Mill Academy Launches Working Partnership with Wheelwrights

Posted: 15th September 2021

Staff and Students were presented with a plaque awarded by The Worshipful Company of Wheelwrights.

In attendance were Head Boy, Kowen Dalziel and Head Girl, Dilys Cook. The plaque represents the support that Wheelwrights will offer the school. Their goal is to raise aspirations of students in certain academic fields.

The Worshipful Company of Wheelwrights is one of many livery companies of the city of London providing charitable and educational advances through philanthropic actions.

The partnership was proposed by School Governor, Andrew Overton. Since being introduced, the two have worked together on a common programme.

Wheelwrights Master, David Mortlock, has attended school assemblies to present awards to students who have excelled within Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematical based subjects. The livery company will continue the scheme into this year to reward students for their advances and dedication.

Headteacher, Laura McGlashan said that the company’s philanthropy provides students opportunities that they otherwise wouldn’t have.

She said: “We are absolutely delighted to be working with the Wheelwrights. The great educational opportunities provided to our students range from school trips to introducing them to new worlds that students wouldn’t normally be able to access."

Peter Taylor, Wheelwrights Court Assistant said: “Our core ethos is to promote mobility. Our relationship with Burnt Mill will focus on social mobility where we think we can make a difference through large contributions to the school.”

He continued: “We can certainly assist [students within the school in providing insight to the wider world prior to leaving education] I think we are in a position to offer Burnt Mill Academy the chance to open doors for students as there are more than 200 members within the Wheelwrights that come from many diverse backgrounds within multiple industries.”

Both parties will continue their working partnership into the future as Wheelwrights seeks to continue to provide awards to students excelling in their curriculum as well as providing more opportunities and occasions for students to broaden their outlook into the academic world.
