What skills will students develop and demonstrate?

Students will engage in both literacy and maths within their Science qualification.

There are many topics which include mathematical formulae or balancing of equations. Students will be assessed in their Scientific skills on core practical's during each of the exams.

How will students learning be assessed?

The Combined Science GCSE is equally weighted between 6 exams:

Biology exam x 2 (each 1 hour 10 mins) – examined once in the Summer term at the end of year 11.

Chemistry exam x 2 (each 1 hour 10 mins) - examined once in the Summer term at the end of year 11.

Physics exam x 2 (each 1 hour 10 mins) - examined once in the Summer term at the end of year 11. 

What will students learn about?

The Combined Science GCSE is comprised of 3 components; Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

Biology: Cells and Control, Genetics, Natural Selection and Genetic Modification, Ecosystems and natural cycles, Plant Structures and their functions, Animal coordination, control and homeostasis, Exchange and transport in animals, and the development of medicines.

Chemistry: Atomic structure, The periodic table, Ionic Bonding, Covalent Bonding, Substances and Calculations, States of Matter, Methods of Separating and purifying substances, Acids, Obtaining and using Metals, Electrolytic processes, Reversible reactions, Fuels, Heat Energy changes in chemical reactions, Earth and atmospheric science.

Physics: Motion, Forces and conservation of energy, Waves, Light and the electromagnetic spectrum, Radioactivity, Astronomy, Energy – Forces doing work, Forces and their effects, Electricity and circuits, Magnetism and the motor effect, Forces and matter.

What grades can students access?

Students can complete Higher or Foundation level exams.

Students will be graded from 9-1 (9 being the highest grade)

What can students progress on to after completing this course?

Students can move onto complete A levels/college courses in any of the Sciences.

Chemistry GCSE x 2 exams (each 1 hour 45 mins) - examined once in the Sum- mer term at the end of year 11.

Physics GCSE x 2 exams (each 1 hour 45 mins) - examined once in the Summer term at the end of year 11.
